Salado Project Backpack
Project Backpack is a community-wide project that involves both fundraising and distribution of backpacks filled with grade specific school supplies to qualifying children in the Salado Independent School District that need assistance.
Project Backpack first began in 2009 as a community-wide fundraising effort. Originally the fundraiser monies were used to purchase backpacks alone. The backpacks supplemented the Back-to-School program that had already been in place through Salado Family Relief since after the organization became a 501 (c) in 1997. Salado’s generosity has allowed this fundraiser to grow each year so that it now covers most of the cost of both the backpacks and the school supplies. Last year Project Backpack spent approximately $8500.00 and served 86 families and 180 students in the Salado Independent School.
As Salado continues to grow, the number of families participating in Project Backpack has also grown. There was a significant increase in participating families last year and it is expected that there will be an increase in participation again this year with supply costs only increasing. The Salado Family Relief board has been actively working on ways to reduce the average cost of the supply kits and the backpacks to help cover the expected increase of participation in the upcoming year.
The Salado Family Relief board wishes to thank all who have contributed to meeting the needs of families and school kids in our community. “The generosity of the Village churches, businesses, and individual citizens is so appreciated,” said Marilyn Griffin. Griffin has helped to coordinate the fundraiser each year. “By covering most of the cost to Salado Family Relief for the Back-to-School Program, Project Backpack enables the SFR board to meet additional needs for families such as supplemental support for utilities and rent payments.”
